ADCB is committed to drive environmental awareness through its partnership with EWS-WWF

ADCB has partnered with Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) to drive awareness among the community about the importance of our wildlife and the future sustainability of our natural environment. We reaffirm our commitment to being an environmentally conscious bank and we urge all of our customers and the broader community to support the work that EWS-WWF is undertaking in the UAE to protect our natural environment. EWS-WWF works with people and institutions within the UAE, to conserve biodiversity, tackle climate change and reduce the ecological footprint through education, awareness, policy, and science-based conservation initiatives.

  • September 2014 : Fresh Water

    ADCB and EWS-WWF thank you for your donations towards protecting UAE’s few remaining freshwater reserves.

    With your support, ADCB was able to facilitate a substantial donation of AED 62,286 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) during September 2014, towards protecting our planet’s most precious commodity.

    Only 2.5% of Earth’s water is freshwater and more than two-thirds of it is largely inaccessible. Since 2013, EWS-WWF has spearheaded the planning and implementation of Wadi Wurayah, UAE’s first National Park. Through Wadi Wurayah National Park, EWS-WWF aims to restore and sustainably manage this freshwater ecosystem and its precious resources, while continually expanding knowledge through research and learning programmes.

    To put it in perspective, here are some examples of costs involved in running a research centre in the UAE:

    • Production of educational materials costs AED 5,500.
    • 1 water quality laboratory analysis costs AED 10,000.
    • In-house IT requirements for running a research centre cost AED 44,000 per year.

  • August 2014 : Environmental Education

    ADCB and EWS-WWF thank you for your donations to help invest in tomorrow’s eco-leaders.

    During August, ADCB was able to facilitate a donation of AED 50,923 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), in support of environmental education.

    Since 2002, EWS-WWF has played a leading role in promoting environmental education in the UAE by deepening relationships with educational authorities and the wider community, and fostering local capacity-building in UAE schools to ensure that environmental education is included in school curriculum. More than 80,000 students have benefited from EWS-WWF’s educational programmes to date.

    Below are some examples of the costs involved in running an environmental education programme in the UAE, and how the donations contribute:

    • Environmental education workshops for 30 schools: AED 25,000.
    • Hosting and maintaining an online education platform: AED 70,000 per year.
    • Production of educational materials:AED 5,500 – 10,000.
    • Managing and coordinating 1 programme: approx. AED 350,000 per year.

  • May 2014 : Turtle Conservation

    On behalf of the Hawksbill turtle, ADCB and the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), thank you for your donations and for supporting the efforts of ADCB and EWS-WWF to protect and preserve the environment and our planet. 

    During the month of May, the ATM donation platform was dedicated to the EWS-WWF’s conservation efforts towards conserving the marine turtle. With your help, in May 2014, ADCB was able to facilitate a significant donation of AED 52,379.00. 

    Your contribution was used by EWS-WWF for on-the-ground conservation expenses, including costs associated with: 

    • Tagging and tracking critically endangered Hawksbill marine turtles using satellite transmitters and monitoring movements to map key marine habitats in the Gulf, which are essential to preserve and help save the Hawksbill turtles from extinction.
    • Organizing and facilitating an environmental education workshop for schools, empowering them to incorporate “environmental education” to breed the future generation of environmental leaders, and help them reduce their carbon footprint.
    • Organizing a Blue Flag capacity building workshop for beach/marina operators to help them manage their beach/marina in an environmentally responsible way and help preserve our precious coastline.

  • March 2014 : Earth Hour

    Thank you for your donations and for supporting the efforts of ADCB and EWS-WWF to protect and preserve the environment and our planet. 

    With your help, in March 2014, ADCB was able to facilitate a substantial donation of AED 56,136.00 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF). The ATM donation platform was part of the Bank’s broader awareness campaign relating to Earth Hour, which promotes the importance of Earth Hour to raise awareness on the issue of climate change and promote business and individuals to take action to tackle it. 

    Your contribution helps with on-the-ground conservation expenses, including costs associated with: 

    • Designing and promoting the “Get Enlightened. Make the Switch” campaign: an awareness campaign launched around Earth Hour, encouraging the general public and organizations to use their power and make the switch to energy efficient lighting. 
    • Organizing and facilitating an environmental education workshop for schools, empowering them to incorporate “environmental education” to breed the future generation of environmental leaders, and help them reduce their carbon footprint.

    ADCB and EWS-WWF thank you for your donations and support to protect and preserve the UAE coastline. 
     
    During the month of December 2013, ADCB’s ATM donations platform was featuring EWS-WWF’s Blue Flag programme. Working together, EWS-WWF and the UAE government strive to safeguard the UAE coastline, marine environment and public health, and through the Blue Flag programme, have introduced strict criteria for water quality, for environmental education, information and management, and safety.
     
    With your support, ADCB was able to facilitate a substantial donation of AED 86,552 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) during December 2013.
     
    Here are a few examples of the on the ground conservation expenses required to continue our current initiatives as well as kick-start new ones where needed:
     
    • AED 25K: the costs of arranging 1 capacity building workshop for beach/ marina operators and other stakeholder to help building their capacity on Blue Flag standards.
    • AED 55K: the costs related to designing and implementing an awareness campaign to educate the public of the sensitive marine environment.
    As at end of December 2013, your contributions have raised a total of AED 371,677.00 in 2013 towards EWS-WWF’s education, climate change & energy and species conservation efforts.

    ADCB and EWS-WWF thank you for your donations and support to protect and conserve our wildlife.
     
    During the months of August and September 2013, ADCB’s ATM donations platform was dedicated to Endangered Species conservation. Through research of the habitats and movements of key species EWS-WWF develops a greater understanding of the key conservation needs of flagship species in the region. As well, EWS-WWF works closely with the CITES authorities, enforcement agencies, and other partners to improve the integrated response mechanism and improve capacity to address wildlife trade issues. With your help, ADCB facilitated a substantial donation of AED 89,509.00 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF).
     
    Your contributions were used by EWS-WWF to enhance the impact of its work through education and species conservation initiatives. Some costs associated with species conservation are:
     
    • AED 2,500: the cost of setting up one camera trap to monitor the rich wildlife of Wadi Wurayah national park, helping us develop effective conservation plans to protect fragile freshwater habitats and species and manage the national park to the best international standards
    • AED 30,000: the cost of organizing and facilitating a capacity building workshop 
    • AED 30,000: the cost of tagging and tracking one critically endangered Hawksbill marine turtle using satellite transmitters and monitoring its movements

  • June 2013 : Heroes of the UAE

    During the month of June 2013 ADCB facilitated your contributions through our ATMs to support the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF’s (EWS-WWF) Heroes of the UAE Private Sector Programme and help businesses to reduce their carbon footprint through energy and water conservation.

    Your contributions of AED 51,962 will help with on-the-ground expenses for the Heroes of the UAE Private Sector Programme. For example, this contribution will help cover the costs of running a workshop focusing on best practices in energy and water conservation, for up to 100 people from over 50 organizations.

  • April 2013 : Turtle & Marine Conservation

    A big thank you from the environment!

    With your help, ADCB was able to facilitate a substantial donation of AED 57,336 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) during April 2013, to help protect the Hawksbill Turtle from becoming extinct.

    These are a few examples of the on the ground conservation expenses that this contribution will help cover:

    • The cost of conducting a field survey by the EWS-WWF conservation team to verify turtle feeding grounds in the waters of Abu Dhabi, identified from previous years of turtle-tracking data.
    • The cost of filming and live-streaming the TEDxWWF event, which brought 11 inspirationalspeakers from around the world to Abu Dhabi to deliver innovative talks related to environmental causes.

    With your help, ADCB was able to facilitate a substantial donation of AED 86,318 for Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) during January and February 2013.

    These are few examples of on the ground conservation expenses that this contribution will help:

    • The cost of sending 20 students on an educational field trip to learn about the biodiversity in Wadi Wurayah National Park, Fujairah is AED 8,000
    • The cost of running a workshop focusing on best practices in energy and water conservation for up to 75 people is AED 45,000
    • The cost of hosting a Choose Wisely campaign workshop for students to learn more about sustainable fisheries is AED 10,000.
