Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting individuals and businesses by compromising email accounts to carry out fraudulent activities. These attacks are often difficult to detect, as they may originate from legitimate-looking email addresses and mimic trusted contacts.

What is happening?

Fraudsters gain unauthorised access to email accounts and use them to:

  • Send fake payment instructions.
  • Request confidential or sensitive information.
  • Impersonate trusted individuals or executives.
  • Redirect financial transactions to fraudulent accounts.

Potential impact

Victims of email hacking may experience:

  • Financial loss due to unauthorised fund transfers.
  • Data breaches exposing personal or business information.
  • Reputational damage from compromised communications.

How you can stay safe

While banks continuously monitor for suspicious activity and enhance their security systems to protect you, your vigilance plays a vital role in preventing fraud. You are encouraged to take the necessary precautions:

  • Verify payment instructions: always confirm any changes in payment details or urgent financial requests through a known contact number of the sender or in person.
  • Be cautious with links and attachments: avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening unexpected files.
  • Use strong, unique passwords: update them regularly and avoid reusing passwords across accounts.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): this adds an extra layer of protection to your email and online accounts.
  • Look closely at sender email addresses – scammers often attempt to spoof legitimate email domains.
  • Avoid entering your credentials on any unfamiliar websites.
  • Regularly update your device software to patch any vulnerabilities in your device operating system, browser and applications.
  • Monitor your email activity: watch for unusual login attempts or unauthorized changes.

If you believe you have been targeted by fraud, please report it immediately through our official Contact Centre on 600 50 2030.

Stay Safe online with authentic websites:

If you are unsure about the authenticity of a website, you can visit the UAE Government’s Stay Safe platform: Stay Safe Website URL: https://staysafe.csc.gov.ae/home

Simply copy and paste any website link you are unsure of into StaySafe. It will check multiple sources to determine whether the site is a scam, phishing attempt, or a legitimate website.

Please note these sources are not complete or error-free, as new types of phishing attempts and well-hidden scams may not be identifiable.

StaySafe is one of many tools and checks available, and additional measures should always be taken to verify the authenticity of a website.
